RedactedRoute Privacy Policy

Overview

RedactedRoute is a privacy-focused turn-by-turn navigation app that routes around ALPR (Automated License Plate Reader) cameras. We designed RedactedRoute to collect the minimum data needed to provide navigation, and nothing more.

No account required. No sign-up. No ads. No third-party trackers.

Data We Collect

Location Data

Purpose: Route calculation and turn-by-turn navigation.

Your current location is used to calculate routes and provide navigation instructions.
Location is processed in real-time and is not stored permanently on our servers.
Location is not tied to your identity — we do not collect account information.
Your destination is sent to our self-hosted routing engine (Valhalla on routing.flockfree.app) to calculate the fastest and privacy routes.
Map tiles are served from our self-hosted tile server (tiles.flockfree.app). Tile requests include tile coordinates but not your GPS location.
Location data is deleted from our routing servers after route calculation is complete.

Search Queries

Purpose: Destination search and autocomplete.

When you search for a destination, your search query is sent to our self-hosted Photon geocoder (geocode.flockfree.app), running on our own VPS. No third party sees your search queries.
If GPS is available, your approximate location is included for proximity bias (results near you rank higher).
Search queries are not stored on our servers.
Search queries are not tied to your identity.

Camera Data

ALPR camera locations are bundled in the app — sourced from DeFlock (data.dontgetflocked.com), a public database of known ALPR cameras.
Camera data is updated when the app is updated. No network call is made for camera data during normal use.
User-contributed camera locations are stored locally on your device only.

App Preferences

Your settings (theme, voice prompts on/off, distance units, home address) are stored locally on your device using Android SharedPreferences.
These preferences are never uploaded to any server.

Drive Logs

The app writes a diagnostic log (drive_log.txt) to your device's internal storage during navigation. This helps us diagnose issues.
Drive logs are never uploaded automatically. You can pull them via ADB if you choose to share them for debugging.

Data We Do NOT Collect

No account information — no email, no password, no profile.
No personal identifiers — no device ID, no advertising ID.
No contact information — no phonebook access.
No financial data — the app is free.
No photos or media — no camera access.
No microphone access — voice instructions are output only (TTS).
No advertising — no ad SDKs, no ad networks.
No third-party trackers — no analytics, no crash reporting SDKs.

Self-hosted routing — Our Valhalla routing engine runs on our own VPS. Your origin and destination coordinates are sent to calculate routes. This data is not logged or stored beyond the immediate request.

Self-hosted tiles — Map tiles are served from Cloudflare R2 via our Worker. Tile requests contain tile coordinates (which map tile to fetch) but do not include your GPS location.

Self-hosted geocoding — Our Photon geocoder runs on our own VPS at geocode.flockfree.app. Search queries are processed on our servers and are not sent to any third party. Queries are not logged or stored beyond the immediate request.

DeFlock provides the ALPR camera database. This data is downloaded during app development and bundled in the APK. No network request to DeFlock is made during normal app use.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party for advertising, marketing, or any purpose other than providing the navigation service (route calculation via our self-hosted routing engine, search via Photon).

Data Security

All network communication uses HTTPS/TLS encryption.
Location data is not stored on our servers.
App preferences and drive logs are stored in the app's private internal storage on your device — other apps cannot access them.

Your Rights

Since we do not collect or store personal data tied to your identity:

There is no account to delete.
There is no personal data to export.
You can clear all app data at any time via Android Settings > Apps > RedactedRoute > Clear data.
Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.

Children's Privacy

RedactedRoute is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children. The app is rated for all audiences.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted in the app's Play Store listing and within the app.
